"That drawing... it's, like, like a tattoo!" [Oct. 8th, 2008|01:16 am]

stealyourtea82
[music |Album 88 blues show]

Some vapid girl said that to me at a boring, alcohol-centric party I very briefly attended this past Saturday. Blarg and a half. She was describing one of my symmetrical drawings I was working on until I recovered from the one beer I had drank at the party ; I rarely drink so one beer necessitated me having to sit and pass some time before I could drive with a good conscience. Anyway, I was working on this nothing drawing and this girl, albeit in a good spirit, commented that my drawing reminded her of tattoos. She didn't know that was on the worse end of the spectrum of things to say to me about my drawings, so I can't hold it against her, but her comment and others just like it really make me want to stop drawing such things, because I have no desire to be lumped in with tattoo artists, graffiti painters, or low-brow, pop-surrealists.

Then I get invited to a show at MINT in February and what am I showing alongside? A tattoo artist from Athens and some mediocre graphic designer/painter from Atlanta. And what does MINT want me to include? The symmetrical stuff. Well, damn you, I don't have a whole blessed lot of the stuff and I certainly am not the kind to arbitrarily crank the stuff out just to satisfy you and your audience. In fact, I'm so hardheaded I am going to go in the exact oppostie direction; I am going to be difficult because I feel I am being boxed in and limited by some puerile, shallow fascination rooted in instincts and tastes that are, frankly, below what I'm trying to accomplish in general. In short, I am not a caterer.

I keep coming back to this, and I apologize if I appear to drone a little, but where the hell are the real artists in this town? Does this part of Atlanta I'm living in just happen to be the nucleus of bad art in this town? Are there decent artists over in Castleberry Hill and nowhere else? I am so sick of being told I should do tattoos, or that my videogame work isn't as interesting. My videogame work is plenty interesting if you'll stop treating art like some kind of television cartoon meant to immediately gratify the metaphorical sensitive tissues in your feeble, PBR-rattled brain.

And yeah, woe is me, I got invited to a show. I know, I know. But I just feel a resistance to the direction this in particular is going. I don't want to be associated with this. If I am going to be in this show, I am going to make work which sets me far apart from what I would be perceived to be. I define my work, not some gaggle of street-art enthusiasts.

Mimicreme? [Oct. 7th, 2008|08:38 pm]

I just moved to a new area with a new-to-me grocery store and they carry a cream substitute called Mimicreme. Maybe this is really new and nobody's mentioned it before. I am curious to try it for curries or baking but it costs a bit more than a carton of soy creamer. But I'd be interested in purchasing some if it works noticeably better in recipes.

Has anyone on this community tried it and if so what were your impressions?

(Also, if you have soy allergies and want a cream substitute, this might be of interest to you.)

I study Nichiren Buddhism under the lay organization Soka Gakkai International, Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is an organization committed to the promotion of peace, culture and education, rooted in the philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism. In our little liturgy books there is a pray in the back that reads pray for peace throughout the world and the happiness of all living beings and recently I believe it has been changed to human beings. Not only that but I see a lot of my fellow Buddhists eating meat still. I do not feel it is my mission to convert people into veganism but rather I'd like to just get them to agree that being an omnivore causes more harm than good. Perhaps from there veganism can be achieved. In this particular Buddhism dialogue and studying are key factors. But still, I know very few vegans in this practice. There are some vegetarians but not many.

Anyway, I tried to get some answers about that today. I asked, "Why do a lot of the Buddhists we know continue to eat meat? I find it to be very cruel and Daisaku Ikeda and Nichiren Dashonin talk about peaceful societies but how can they still eat meat and follow the words of these two men?" My friend gave me a couple of answers I am not satisfied with. He told me, "Read the gosho "Earthly Desires are Enlightenment" http://www.sgilibrary.org/view.php?page=317
Buddhism is more about moderation and balance than it is about one extreme or another. It is personal preference. Eating animals is not cruel. It is fundamentally different from saying that some processes used to create food are cruel. Very few people actually kill the animals they eat. Every person's mission and karmic struggle is different. Plants and vegetables are still being killed, as well. Plants are still part of our environment, just as animals are. The central nervous system is one part that makes up animals. Their spirit and inner self -- their buddhahood -- is another. All living things have this buddhahood. Eating meat in excess or killing animals for sport is an entirely different thing. They eat the animals to gain the protein. Yes you can get protein from many other things However, all people can achieve the same thing through a means different than they do at present. If you want to understand why Nichiren Buddhists do something that is an earthly desire. Read Nichiren's Daishonin's letter about why earthly desires are enlightenment and why they are acceptable.
The point is that all societies adapt and need to adapt to be useful to the most people at a particular time."

Holy, man.. that was a lot. I am pretty bad at arguing, yknow? I just don't know what to say to this. Normally people completely understand that eating meat contributes negatively to society and although they continue to eat it they acknowledge it is not the best course of action. I am just frustrated. I am still confused about how earthly desires are enlightenment so if anyone can help me with that. If you want you can read the gosho, I linked it above. I'd love to discuss it with a vegan and get your thoughts on it. (it honestly confuses the hell out of me) Thanks a lot.

Excess Avocados [Oct. 7th, 2008|04:20 pm]

[barishae]
My dad brought home about a dozen avocados the other day, probably picked from my papaws(grandpa) tree. He said I can have them, and I don't want them to go to waste. I like free things. :)
Are there any good recipes for avocados out there? I'm sure there are, I am just oblivious of them.
A small recipe, and short cooking time is preferred, but throw whatever you have at me.

Thanks!

Road trip snacks? [Oct. 7th, 2008|04:36 pm]

At the end of the month I'm taking a trip to Newfoundland to help my family move. We'll be in the car for 2-3 days and we're on a budget. What are some delicious homemade snack foods to bring on the trip? Also some ideas for non-vegans (my boyfriend is a steak and eggs kind of boy, and he's the one driving us)?

I don't know if this is allowed, if not just let me know!

This is a video clip of part of the movie "Earthlings". In this particular clip there are only beautiful images of animals; no graphic stuff. It is in my top five favorite quotes, and it is CERTAINLY now my favorite animal rights quote. You have to hear it a few times to even begin to truly understand the depth of the words he says. I just feel so enlightened whenever I hear this clip. And of course the way that Joaquin Phoenix narrates he conveys it so well. He talks SO well throughout this whole movie. I love this quote so much that I actually bought the book that the quote is from! It is by Henry Beston, a naturalist who stayed isolated on Cape Cod for a year. Can't wait to read it! Anyway, on to the video.

This is the saddest thing I've seen in a long time. What annoyed me most was that it was on the BBC.co.uk homepage with the caption.

"Sick of hearing about stock slides? Never fear, we have the solution - monkey waiters. Click to watch them in action, or choose from our selection of other simian stories below."

Are animals a commodity or am I just over reacting? Heres the video.

Any help?? [Oct. 7th, 2008|01:18 am]

[industrialvixen]
Hey there. I live in a basement apartment and I have a mouse that lives with me. Last winter it got super cold up here in Boston and mice got into my apt building for the first time, so the landlord put traps everywhere (except my apt per my request) and got rid of most of them. Now there's one left who is stubbornly living around my stove and I do not know how to get rid of it. I don't know anyone who has a cat I could borrow to scare it away, and I am really ***really*** sick of finding mouse poop in my kitchen.

Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Douglas fir tea! [Oct. 6th, 2008|07:47 pm]

vegancooking

[marysia]
My mom knows how much I love tea and conifers, so she surprised me with some douglas fir tip tea as a souvenir from her recent road trip. I didn't even know douglas fir needles were edible! It's delicious. It tastes almost like dill or something - it isn't really a sweet tea, but it tastes refreshing. I'm curious now about making my own. Has anyone here made conifer tea before? The tea box says that the spring tips are the most flavorful, but with normal needles or tips, I'm not sure whether it would be best to dry them first... I haven't actually made my own tea before at all, so general tips would be appreciated too. :)

P.S. Dinner right now is an avocado, spicy tofu with onions/garlic, and cabbage soft taco/burrito thing. It might sound a bit weird, but is really good. :D

A vegetarian of all people [Oct. 6th, 2008|11:06 pm]

[leah_loves]

[music |The Breeders]

So, I work with some vegetarians, and one of them is, well insane a little bit. She was raised vegetarian, is from England, and (I mean this) she doesn't care about animals dying. She tells me she kills animals, starved her dogs to death once, and that she kicks her cats from one side of the room/house to the other;she only has cats to kill mice. She says she doesn't give a fuck about animal rights and thinks that animals should die.

It really blows my mind. Apparently she's just vegetarian because it's how she was raised and because it's, "healthy." No lie, it's healthIER than eating meat BUT SHE HAD THE NERVE TO TELL ME I AM UNHEALTHY THE OTHER DAY AND I WANTED TO BITCH HER OUT SO BADY!!!! Sadly, I was at work and wouldn't be nice to do that. But I mean, it wasn't very nice of her to laugh in my face and tell me I don't eat right. Ugh, so whatever--I've lost respect for this chick and I can't figure out any other word to use to describe what she said to me except for the word hateful.

And she didn't just say it once. During break she was eating a sandwich she made with Tofurky Kielbasa. Honestly, every time I eat that flavor, I feel so sick afterwards. I think it tastes really gross. So I said, "Oh that looks really good, but every time I eat that Tofurky sausage I feel nauseated." She replies, "HA THAT'S BECAUSE YOU DON'T FUCKIN' EAT RIGHT!"

OH and I was talking to her about a UTI I had, she said I should take two supplements, one being BOVINE. I told her that it was cow and she yelled at me saying, 'IT'S FOR YOUR FUCKIN' HEALTH. IT'S MEDICINE. WHO CARES ABOUT ANIMALS?!" I'm really not exaggerating, that's how she talks to me. And, I didn't take stupid cow pills and I am completely healthy.

?!?!?! I can just let you rant about this in commentssssssssssssssssssstarting NOW!

Sort of along the lines of Nylon's "Private Icon" (the only reason I still read it)
who/what are some of your favorite less obvious beauty/style inspirations,
(or doesn't get name dropped incessantly in magazines or blogs)?
Perhaps a stylish figure who's recognized more for their work then personal style.
For example Sofia Coppola once mentioned Nick Drake as a style icon.

Some of mine:

Luella Bartley

Jacqueline Schnabel

Lettuce rest I'm feeling beet [Oct. 6th, 2008|08:59 pm]
cheapvegan
[jeypeg]
I can never use up lettuce as fast as it can turn black and mushy... (mmmm), so maybe I should eat more salad, but that could just be overkill. Anyone got some fantastic lettuce concoctions that don't involve lettuce being a salad?

Sooo far I'm making cream of lettuce soup. And I'm considering frying it with top ramen in soy sauce.

What else can I do with lettuce?

Cream of lettuce soup (it's a french thing...)
  • 4 Tablespoons fake butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced fine
  • 2 Tablespoons parsley, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh tarragon, minced
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cups romaine lettuce, finely shredded
  • 1 cup watercress, finely chopped
  • 4 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 cups soy milk or blenderized tofu
  • salt and pepper to taste

Heat butter in a large saucepan, then saute garlic, parsley, tarragon, and onion until the onion is transparent. Add the lettuce and watercress, and stir over low heat for 5 minutes. Stir in the stock and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. When ready to serve, beat the tofu/ soymilk together with several tablespoons of the hot soup, then pour in, stirring constantly over low heat until the soup thickens slightly. Stir in salt and pepper and serve immediately.

I'll let you know how it goes....I'm skeptical, plus it's not normally vegan, so I'm adapting it..
